Groundwork Market Garden is a two-acre Certified Organic urban farm on Buffalo's East Side.
We've been growing food here since 2015.

Groundwork started with a belief that small farms belong in cities, and that good food, healthy soil and meaningful farm work can all take root in the same place.

We began farming on vacant lots on Buffalo's East Side in 2015. Over the years, those lots have grown into a working urban farm with fields, high tunnels, a greenhouse, wash and pack space, and a busy neighborhood farm stand.
Today, we grow a diverse mix of Certified Organic vegetables, herbs, mushrooms, flowers and other specialty crops for our CSA members, farm stand customers, restaurants and community.

A lot has changed since our first season. What hasn't changed is our commitment to growing excellent food, caring for the land we're fortunate enough to farm, and being a good neighbor in the community we call home.

How We Grow



Our farm has been USDA Certified Organic since 2018.
For us, organic farming is about much more than avoiding synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. We think about the farm as a living system, starting with the soil.

​We use practices like cover cropping, compost and organic amendments, reduced tillage, mulching, tarping and careful nutrient management to build healthier soils and grow resilient crops.

Farming intensively on a small urban footprint asks a lot of the land. Our goal is to leave our soil healthier, more productive and more resilient with every season.

Growing Food in the City



Farming in Buffalo is different.

Our fields sit among homes, businesses and city streets. Our customers can walk or bike to the farm. Kids stop at the fence to see what's growing. Neighbors watch the seasons change alongside us.

Being an urban farm means we're not separate from our community. We're part of it.

That has shaped Groundwork from the beginning, from opening our weekly farm stand to creating opportunities for people to gather at the farm and partnering on projects that make locally grown food more accessible throughout Buffalo.

More Than A Decade of Work

What started in 2015 as a small urban farm has grown into a place where thousands of pounds of food are grown each year, farmers make their living, neighbors shop for their weekly groceries, restaurants source local produce, and people gather around food.
