A Piece of History
Our farm property sits next to a historic 40,000 square foot building at 52 Leslie St. It was constructed in 1922 and was home to A. Teachout Company, which specialized in the manufacture of doors, sashes, and other related building construction materials. The company was founded by Abraham Teachout, who was born in Western New York in 1817 and moved to Ohio in 1836. He went on to become one of Cleveland’s wealthiest 19th-century businessmen and a close friend of John D. Rockefeller.
Local residents may remember when the building was later taken over by the Whitney-Dickinson Seed Company, whose grass seeds were distributed nationally from the 52 Leslie site. Fun Buffalo fact: their grass seeds were donated to reseed many of the baseball parks in Buffalo after the blizzard of '77! The company left behind their now fading "Farm Seeds" signs on the side of the building, which we took as a good omen when starting our farm business next door in 2015.

A Bold Vision For the Future
In 2017, we acquired the Teachout Building and are currently working to rehab and revitalize this historic asset. We are thrilled to be a small part of Buffalo's ever-evolving entrepreneurial story- one that has left us with beautiful buildings like The Teachout at 52 Leslie Street. But, let's be honest, industry of the 1900s was not always concerned with what was best for people and the planet.
We intend to transform this historic building for industry that's fit for the 21st century. We envision a bolder, greener, and healthier way forward for Buffalo. This space will allow our farm to produce crops year-round, including an indoor mushroom laboratory and aquaponic grow rooms, as well as food education space and commercial kitchens for processing. The building will also host commercial space for other local businesses.
